Sony Trinitron TVs

anonymous Posted Dec 31, 2004

"The Petition":

My family has a Sony Trinitron TV (Model Number KV-35V36) that was purchased in 1998. It too, like so many other of these TVs suddenly turned off and died. Over the years, we have bought many Sony products and have had little problems. However, this television "epidemic" is a major issue and one that must be dealt with and solved. Therefore, I propose this; ANYONE WHO HAS/HAD A PROBLEM WITH A SONY TRINITION TV, PLEASE POST YOUR NAME, MODEL AND SERIAL NUMBER ON THIS WEBSITE, WHERE I WILL PLACE THEM ON A PETITION TO BE E-MAILED/MAILED TO SONY. They might be able to ignore one of us, but they can't and WILL NOT ignore all of us. -Thank you

I have had my Sony 40XBR800 for about six months. I bought it off a friend who had it since new in 2003. It is only 5 years old and about a week ago it started with the blinking stand-by light, no picture or sound. I hear the internals clicking like the picture will come on then nothing but the light blinking 7 times pausing and then repeating. What is very frustrating is that I have an old Sony Trinitron KV-27TW76 console floor model (27") which I bought new in 1992. I have literally traveled the world with it and it still works perfectly. It looks like Sony's quality has gone to crap. I don't think I will ever own another Sony after seeing this build quality.

Mine just went kaput about 15 miutes ago. I have a Sony Trinitron CRT, 29" with PIP - I got it as a hand-me-down from a friend, which means I don't have the model number on hand, but also means I'm not out any of my own money. I was watching TV, glanced away for a few minutes, and when I looked back, the screen was black. Sound works perfectly. Channel surfing confirmed it was not a channel-specific problem, and when I turned the TV off and back on, the picture came back, then blinked, lined, and went out again. I have had the TV about a year and a half, and the TV can't be more than about 5 years old. Turning it on now, there is sound, but no picture at all, and the standby/timer LED blinks. I immediately came online to Google the problem to see if there were any fixes, but so far, all I've found are lists of complaints from people with the same (or similar) problem, so I guess it's time for me to find a new TV (not Sony brand). ...at least it let me finish watching season 2 of Battlestar Galactica this morning before dying on me!

Have a Sony Trinitron KV-36XBR450 purchased in 2000. $ 2300.00. Same problem as most of the replies. The set turns on and a green screen with thin white lines in an hour glass shape comes on then the set turns off. The standby/timer light flashes. Big bucks to estimate and repair with no guarantee that it will be really repaired. No help at all in the Houston area for decent technicians so we are going to put it out in the front yard next to the rusting pick up truck and buy a flat screen. But definitly not a Sony. Had bad experiences with Sony getting monitor repairs so I should have had more sense than to buy Sony. Too much money for sub-standard products and service. It is getting so you should figure TV's are throw away items. Nothing over $ 400.00 with no maintenanace agreement. Breaks down, just out in the front yard with the rest of the junk.

32 " sony trinitron won't turn on Model KV32HS510.. purchased 01/01/2005. After pushing the button 40 or 50 times it came on. after a couple of days it went to 100 times. now won't come on at all. A service man is coming out in the morning. Had a warranty, and was told it would cost nothing.. I'll see. Roland Gebert

Hi everyone, I've got a problem with a Sony Trinitron 32" TV that has had some problems for the last few years. The model number is KV-32S20 from what I saw on the back of the TV, and it was made in June 1998. What my problem is, is that I have the picture blinking problem. When I turn on the TV, it shows an initial picture after a few seconds. Then if there is a picture brighter than absolute black, the screen flashes black...then to a quick picture, then black again. This happens in normal TV mode and when I'm trying to play on my PS3. I think the tubes cannot handle bright light anymore (am I right?) but I have no experience with soldering or TV repair whatsoever. What I'm asking is, is there anything I can do besides turning the picture & brightness down all the way to stop the blinking? Or should I just give up any hopes of having a nice TV for now?

October 2, 2008 Sony set has turned off and will not turn back on...Blinking 7 times I have a FD Trinitron Wega KV-34hs510 tv that is 3 years old. Have had no problems with the set. Beautiful picture, wonderful telivision up to last week. It turned itself off and will not turn back on. The first 3 times it turned off, we were able to get it to turn back on on average of 6 to 12 hours later. Now, it will not turn on at all. I have been reading about these problems online, and it seems like this is an on going problem with many of Sonys televisions. Why do they not issue a recall?? I have been a Sony person all my life, but now I am having my doubts and wondering if Sony is not the wonderful company I have always known them to be. Can anyone help me and give me any information on why my set it doing this? My husband would be able to figure out this problem, but he passed away a few years back. Sharon

I have a KV-32S40, mfd in Feb '99, same problem. Three days ago - no picture, no sound, just the interminable flashing of the standby light. Been googling for a fix and so far, in total, I'll be doing 1) the hair dryer test, 2)checking the board for loose solder connections, and finally 3) checking the power supply. But this TV is still only 9 years old, cost up towards $900, and is heavy as hell to even attempt to move. I bought Sony because I always heard it was a solid TV, but with WEGA fiascos and now this....if I have to replace it, it won't be another Sony.

My Sony Trinitron went off shortly after I turned it on - now the standby light blinks and the tv won't go on. A friend also has a trintron only a different model. Similar problem only after several tries she does get it to work, but now the picture is green and she can't change the settings.

I Purchased my Sony KV35V36 in Dec of 1997. I have loved the TV more than any other. It had a great picture. The Color was right on, much better than the LCD's and Plasma's. Nice features in the user menu and great sound for a Television. August 30 2007, just short of 10 years, it died. While watching, the picture shrunk to a dot and went black as if the power went out. It is dead. Had to pull out an old 1982 Zeinith. It still has a good picture and works well, never a problem. Going from 36" to a 19" is a pain. I'm Just not ready for the too wide flat screens. Guess I will see if I can get the Sony fixed. If I have to get a new TV, I will remember to not be tempted by Sony. The high end Sony didn't have the life of other low end TV's that I've had. Shame on Sony for its over hyped quality.
