HomeInability to view anything for recording via the display screen or viewfinder. Purchased in Fall 2003. Everything worked fine on the camera, and the last time it was used was beginning of May 2005. Got it out of its protected bag, safe closet a month later and the camera was non-functional. - I can playback video and view pics on the memory card. - I cannot view anything through the viewfinder or display screen. Once the camera is turned on, the Canon splash screen appears, and then the date/time information shows up against a black screen. It's as if I'm viewing with the lens cap on. (And no, I am not!) Canon has recommended shipping the camera off to their site (NJ or CA) but I would really like to be able to figure out the problem without having to invest the money in shipping and insurance to get it to them so they can tell me my warranty has expired and it'll take more money to fix it than to replace it. Any suggestions? Thank you for any help you can provide!

is this fixable [for free] out of warranty? i think my camera has passed the date. zr70 -- shutter seems to be stuck in wrong position -- clicks open and then closed right when it should be open--- if not under warranty--does anyone know how to fix this--i am pretty handy with electronics... thanks Correction - Records only audio! No video! Wm thanks you guys - really!. These posts helped a lot. The Canon customer service was very helpful to me also. Luckily I live close enough to a Canon repair shop (Irvine, CA) so I'm gonna' drop it off. My only issue is that for me the problems intermittent. I wish it would break "all the way". Thanks again. I got same exactly problem as your descries, can playback, but can not recorder When you switch to camera to record, no image display on the LCL or on the viewfinder. If you did already find out the problem, please let me know, if not I should contact with CANON tech. for support then. Thanks d, h We also had a similar problem! Used it maybe a total of 10 hours since we bought it about 1.5 years ago. Boots up with blue Canon screen, then shows date/time/settings, but only records video and will not show the screen either in the viewfinder or the large screen. Called Canon tech support @ the 800 number and they confirmed that the problem in known and that they are emailing a UPS label and will send tech support tracking info as it is done. Says it should take 7-10 days to get back to me. PS - it's free of charge! Wm Shrewsbury I removed my ZR70 from the case yesterday and have the same problem. I have used the camera maybe 5-6 times over the past 1.5 years and now find it does not show a display. I called Canon today 01/09/05 and they are sending me a UPS label and stated that they will evaluate the issue and if the problem is the known issue, will repair it for free. I am very unhappy that the camera does not work but am excited to hear of the grat service to be provided. If you think you have the CCD problem, check the makers website (no matter which vendor you have, since they all seem to be fixing the problem now...) I went to the Canon website, found the 800- number, and found a friendly voicemail system, and a helpful call taker, who gave me a trouble ticket number. I sent in my unit the next day, after filling in PDF form from the Canon website. (Canon actually sent me a UPS Ground shipping sticker, so it would have been no cost to me, but I didn't understand that was going to happen. I take responsibility for not waiting long enough for the sticker, but I wanted to get it fixed ASAP...). I received the camera today, and wanted to summarize how well Canon did with my problem. :-) I expected them to fix the CCD at no cost (they met my expectations) I forgot a tape, and an 8 MB SD-Flash card in the camera, despite their instructions to not include accessories. (I forgot these...) (parts were returned. But I expected that, too.) They kept me informed via email, during the process, without needing to nag them. (this exceeded my expectations. I think it should work that way with most vendors, but I didn't expect it from them.) The anticipated repair time was 7 work days. It was really only 3 work days. (this exceeded my expectations) Delivery return was overnight shipping! (this exceeded my expectations) I got the tape back, outside the camera. The SD card was still in the camera. (they met my expectations) There was a new neck-strap on the camera, replacing the mildly-frayed one that had been on the camera. I can't be sure, but I think the lens cap is also new. (this exceeded my expectations) Yes, the camera works fine. I expected that! ;-) -Z- I had this problem with my Canon zr60. As mentioned previously, it was a problem with the CCD Assy (whatever that means). I called the Canon toll free number and they knew exactly what I was talking about. They logged my information on their computer and instructed me to mail the camera to their factory service center in NJ. It was fixed free of charge and shipped back to me within two weeks of receipt. I couldn't be happier with the customer service. I had expected an hour long phone battle and got a pleasant five minute conversation. I expected hidden costs and shipping charges but paid $12 including insurance to ship it to NJ. My advice to you is to call the 800 number on the back of your owner's manual. I am having the exact same problem! This is outrageous! Has anyone been able to solve this? I just noticed it not working tonight and desperatly need to use it tomorrow. Could a Mom and Pop camera repair help with this problem? I really need a solution. How can Canon get away with this? I am so livid. Please help if anyone can, email me at chloevicious@yahoo.com and thank you all so much Here's a further update to my saga. I use an online service to get in touch with companies for complaints, compliments and questions. So, I sent a scathing letter to Canon telling them how angry I was with their company and product. About a week later I got a letter from them in the mail stating that they just discovered a "new" way to fix the problem - so new that they had just discovered it since my last e-mail (what a load of hooey the letter was). They did enclosed a shipping label and they are asking me to ship the camera to them (they're paying for it) so that they can fix the camera this "new" way, free of charge. They also stated that if the camera cannot be fixed in the "new" way, they'd call me and tell me how much the charge is. Well, I guess I'll go ahead and send it to them, but I have a feeling that $145 charge is going to creep up somewhere. |
