HomeInability to view anything for recording via the display screen or viewfinder. Purchased in Fall 2003. Everything worked fine on the camera, and the last time it was used was beginning of May 2005. Got it out of its protected bag, safe closet a month later and the camera was non-functional. - I can playback video and view pics on the memory card. - I cannot view anything through the viewfinder or display screen. Once the camera is turned on, the Canon splash screen appears, and then the date/time information shows up against a black screen. It's as if I'm viewing with the lens cap on. (And no, I am not!) Canon has recommended shipping the camera off to their site (NJ or CA) but I would really like to be able to figure out the problem without having to invest the money in shipping and insurance to get it to them so they can tell me my warranty has expired and it'll take more money to fix it than to replace it. Any suggestions? Thank you for any help you can provide!

Hi, I have the exactly same problem reported by you. When I called customer service they gave me the address to ship the camcorder. They acted as if this was a known problem to them. They have not asked me if I am doing anything wrong (user error). I don't want to send the camcorder to the canon service center, to avoid the shipping charges. I have purchased the camcorder in Aug/Sept 03 Lakshmi It is wierd, because I have this same problem too. It was fine, what, a month ago, and then I turned it on and it was doing this. YOU WANT SELL YOUR CAMCORDER NOT WORKING CONDITION,CONTACT ME. Per Canon, they charge a flat rate of $145 and that doesn't include tax or shipping. It appears that I'll have to buy a new camera because it'll be cheaper than fixing this one just to have it break down again.
