We also had a similar problem! Used it maybe a total of 10 hours since we bought it about 1.5 years ago. Boots up with blue Canon screen, then shows date/time/settings, but only records video and will not show the screen either in the viewfinder or the large screen.
Called Canon tech support @ the 800 number and they confirmed that the problem in known and that they are emailing a UPS label and will send tech support tracking info as it is done. Says it should take 7-10 days to get back to me.
