Sony Trinitron display malfunction. HELP!!!

Sony Trinitron display malfunction. HELP!!!

I have a 32” Sony Trinitron (KV-32S45). I bought the unit new. Normally when the unit is turned on the screen would stay black for 3-4 seconds then come on. This “warm-up time” was consistent until a few months ago. I noticed that the screen was gradually taking longer to “warm-up”. Along with this problem came another very annoying one. While watching the T.V. the screen would go black for just a second then come right back on. At first it would happen once a week or so but gradually increased in frequency. The severity of the flashing seemed relative to the lengthening warm-up time. Now if I turn the T.V. on it will flash from black screen to picture (which by the way is crappy) quickly like a strobe light. After 15 minuets or so the flashing will slow to about 3-5 flashes per min. It does this whether I’m watching cable, DVD, or playing a video game. The television is a little over 5 years old. I removed the back and looked for any burnt or broken solder connections but found none although the inside of the T.V. is VERY dusty. No repair/service shop in the town I live in will touch a Sony Trinitron. I have a high aptitude for fixing things like this but I need to know where to start. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

JP, Awesome! After months of pounding on the TV to keep the screen on, I tried your advice. On the KV-35, the lower screw is called creep, but is located in the same place at the end of the red cable. Turned it 1/8 of a turn clockwise and the screen had diagonal lines. Backed if off to 1/16 of a turn, and the screen was able to stay on. Hopefully, this will keep working for a while and keep this 250lb lead boat anchor out of the landfill. PS for Sandi, you need to remove all the screws in back of set in screwholes with => arrows, and then remove three more screws above the AV connectors, then pull the back out. Please exercise common sense and good electrical practice (safer to keep TV unplugged when touching insides), or else don't do it. Dave

Hello, I've got a Sony KV32TW77 and the set just died one night (no picture no audio). I've done some searching and I can say this much after taking the board module out. 1. Tested I/P voltage up to fuse = 120VAC 2. Tested I/P voltage for RY602 which should be 12VDC but found zero volts. 3. Lifted RY602 from board and supplied 12VDC and relay made contact, so it works. So I'm not getting the 12VDC req. to RY602 to get the req. 170VDC B+ Hummm...I'll keep looking....need some schematics and/or service manual or any trible knowledge to help me. TIA, Roy

Hi JP, I am not sure if you have fixed your set yet, but just in case you are still trying here is some info. Most of SONY Trinitrons from this series have common problem with bad solder joints on power supply board. I have replied to many people here who have similar problems. If you do a search on this forum using SONY TV or KV32 as keywords or my name you can find many of my posts for people with similar problems. It sounds like you have a failing joint on one of the components in Horizontal Output Transistor (HOT) Drive circuit. I would recommend not turning on your TV until it is fixed, because it can lead to failure of HOT and other components due to arcing on bad solder joints. A good starting point would be obtaining a Service Manual or at least a schematic. Again, I have already replied to other people with info where to download it on the web free of charge. Good luck, Jack

I am having other problems than those listed in all the emails. Knowing I turned my Trinitron off the night before, I got up twice this week to the TV on, playing..... snow. Last night while watching it, it when to snow. I turned it off...made a squeaking noice. When I turned it back on, the Guideplus screen appears and I can not do anything else with it. Help!

Hey.. Just wanted to check in and see how my club was doing, cause it looks like I'm joining you! My parents Trinitron is doing the same thing. When you first turn the Television on, it takes extremely long for the warm-up period to end.. They end up leaving it on now to avoid waiting 30 minutes to watch television. Then, during playing my Gamecube, I realized it will flicker yet when I blow stuff up... In other words, when I'm playing my video game and I make a lot of light appear suddenly on the screen, the TV doesn't like that either, and it goes buh-bye.. Just like this damn sony is about to go.. buh-bye! =/
