E04 Unit in safeguard mode : Remove and Reattach Battery
I have had this same problem since my warranty ran out on my JVC DV camcorder. When I turn it on to record or play, a code appears on the display screen "E04 Remove and reattach battery. Unit in safegaurd mode." I have tried to remove the battery and replace it and I have the head cleaned. Twice I have brought it in for repairs but over time the same thing comes up. Can any one tell me what causes this and how to rectify it.

Oh gawd, I tapped the speaker for my DVL 805 and it worked too. I hope someone in JVC management is reading this thread and wondering why their cameras are bloody troublesome. I tell you, right now... Mr JVC...get rid of all the design geeks worldwide and make practical products. I'm not buy anymore JVC products until I get a Xmas card from them!!!

When I turn it on to record or play, a code appears on the display screen "E04 Remove and reattach battery. Unit in safegaurd mode." " I have tried to remove the battery and replace it and I have the head cleaned. Twice I have brought it in for repairs but over time the same thing comes up. Can any one tell me what causes this and how to rectify it.

Steve - 3rd Nov 2007 21:53 I have the safegaurd mode error as well. The tricks mentioned earlier to fix the problem helped the first few times but then the problem became more and more frequent and less responsive to the "solutions". JVC is going to lose a lot of customers if this keeps up. The problem is not limited to just a couple models. I have seen all kinds of models listed on this site and others.

John - 13th Nov 2007 2:38 Hi all!
I just fixed a JVC with the E4 errorcode.
The DRUM head was blocked.
After ejecting and forcing the head to move with a wooden tool,
it came loose and the code is gone.
Good luck! John

My Daughter starts school tomorrow and my wife passed me the camera about 15 minutes ago and asked me to work out why it did'nt work. Mmmm...safe guard mode mode on...."better look this up" I said. Google...checked the advice here...smacked the crap out of the camera (Model GR-DVL510EA) and voila!!! works again...THANK YOU ALL. I can't believe what a bucket of excrement this camera has been. Nothing but charger and battery troubles since day one....
Thanks for helping us record the 1st day of school though. Cheers, Sean.

Mildred - 7th Mar 2008 16:56 I saw this, did it and it worked. Good Luck
I have a GR-DVM90, which I bought in a drunken haze on bourbon Street in New Orleans last year during Mardi Gras, needless to say I spent way too much for it and I'm not really sure if it's "Hot" or on the level. At any rate, this past september, I got the good old E 01 error message which I have become quite familiar. This time, however, it would not clear or go away. I have been dreading sending the thing to the nearest JVC Service Center, in Philly, because they want $75 just to look at the damn thing. I put it off till now, since I need to use it soon. I did a search on the internet and came u with these message boards. One of the messages said to tap the camera on teh side where the tape goes in. They said it worked. I thought it was BS. Then I did it. I tapped, and the damn thing came to life. I about fell on the floor. Go figure. I hear tell it starts with using the cheaper DV tapes, like TDK. I don't know for sure about that, but I think I'll go out and buy some good old fashioned expensive JVC tapes. I figure I've got about three hundred bucks till I run out what I would have spent sending it to the service center...... -- Jeffrey S. Wettig (drdkdover@supernet.com), February 14, 2003.

Steve Hope - 29th Apr 2008 0:08 From Jeffs comment in Aug o4; ////It really works!! The "beat the hell out of your camera" method. ////
I followed the advice of using a long foam q-tip with head cleaner alcohol to clean the "condensation" eye which is located in a slightly different location on my old DVL 307 circa 01, but from descriptions found her, I was able to clean it. Then after no change I chose the "hit it in the speaker with the battery" plan. Presto, after leaving the camera overnight while I charged my one hour and my four hour batteries, I came home from work to find Voila, turn on power, no error message, tape inserts ok and records and ejects. Thanks to al;l of you who posted this info, a great resource you all are. Steve, April 28,2008, with a 6 year old JVC camcorder back to life.
