I have a 1991 Trinitron, model KV-20TS27. I got it for free at a rummage sale, even though it seemed fine. Mine would power on, work fine for a while, then one time you'd turn it off and it would not turn back on again. I could hear a hum when I pressed the power button, but nothing else. Eventually it would just turn on by itself, if the power was switched on. This got worse and worse to where sometimes it would not respond to the power button (or remote) at all. HERE'S WHAT I DID: After reading a lot of posts here, and trying the hair dryer trick that worked for many people, I finally cracked the thing open and took a look at the circuit board. I found a site (RiddledTV) that told me C605, an electrolytic capacitor in the power supply (I think) was likely the culprit. This capacitor is somewhat large (narrow and tall) and the values (22uF, 250V) are printed clearly on the outside. You really have to pull the board almost all the way out (it slides out) to see it, but it is there, near the buttons at the front. Guess what: C605 had splattered its guts all over the board. I replaced it with a 10uf, 200V capacitor since that's what I had handy, and it is now as good as new. NOTE: The first rating is not that important, the second is. You need to have a rating of at least 200V or the cap will explode. This solution might not work for everyone, but for me it was such an easy fix that you should at least check it out if you have similar symptoms.
