Re: Sony Trinitron TVs

Komal Wadhwa Posted Oct 09, 2007, in response to:anonymous

We also have a Sony Trinitron (will look up the eaxct model # and serial # and will add those details later). Bought from Best Buy in early 1999. We also seem to have the same 'suddenly totally dead' problem. Yesterday, it wouldn't turn on. Somehow, by clicking the on button again & again it turned on. But then after an hour, whicle it was still on & we were watching a program, it turned off on its owen. Tried a lot but can not turn it back on. It is dead! No pic, no sound. On turining the switch, we hear that click sound, but there is no pic no sound, and then after few seconds we hear another click (the off click sound). The timer/standly light continues to flash. Looking at all these posts, this seems to be a common problem. I have seen brand-name TVs last for 15-20 years without a problem, but with SONY Trinitron TV, people seem to face problems quite ealy on itself. Meanwhile, so not know what to do further - Call a technician & pay an exorbitant amount for troubleshooting & then repair/parts OR buy a new (FLAT screen- wow!) one. If you receive any updates about the repair/solution etc., pls do post and keep us informed. Thanks!

Try running the hair dryer on high heat over the right back side of the TV, where you can hear the switch trying to come on. There seems to be a humidity cut-off switch designed into the controll system, desiged to eliminate arching of power during high humidity. It's been working for me particularly in the mornings when the room has not warmed up yet, and the timer lite is blinking near the on-off switch. Two to three minutes with the dryer on high seems to work. Have a happy new year, Dan.

Did you get it repaired or by a new flat screen. I have the same exact problem. My TV is only 4 years old. The flat screen sounds pretty good right now.
