Put simply as you dont mention the model number, your TV appears to have a defect in the vertical scanning circuit, possibly the IC itself or associated components, and which is a notorious area for problems in JVC TV's. (its nothing to do with the actual tube as such)

This TV is older than I thought. We purchased it in 1991, but this is the first time we had any trouble. The model is AV-2650S. As I said before, the sound was fine, but there was only a black screen. Sometimes the picture would come on for a second then back to black. I don't know if it is worth fixing.
