Re: SONY DSCF717 CCD DAMAGED

marfrota Posted Aug 09, 2005, in response to:Paulo Sa Elias

Dear friends, I am from Brazil and had exactly the same problem. It seems to be the CCD problem again. Sony charged me aprox. US$ 800,00 to repair it although this problem is happening all over the world with different customers typically after 1 or 2 years. There is a project problem with DSC-F717 and they know this. I am an electronic engineer and I know what I am talking about. I am very disappointed with Sony. The should perform a recall (as a serious company should act) instead of ignoring customers. I know that my camera is not under guarantee anymore (just 6 months) but, I do not consider 1,5 years old (after aprox. 1400 pictures) as a reasonable life of a digital camera that is (or was) the top of line of Sony´s Digital Cameras. Specially because I am a very, very careful person with all electronic devices. My camera is like new without any scratch and has never fallen. The local representative service also informed me the CCD must be changed together with the whole set of lens (from Carl Zeiss). This is the recommendation from Sony. It is an absurd. Sony charge us because of their project problem not only the CCD but the whole set of lens. I sent a complete report to Sony aprox. 2 months ago and they just ignored me (as did with customers all over the world) and answered (after 1 month and a lot of complaints) that the camera was not under guarantee anymore (obvious as it was 1,5 years old). Serious companies who have project problems perform a “Recall” even with products that are not under guarantee. At least should charge us reasonable costs. I gave up of my Sony and bought a Nikon. Now, my mission is to send this information all over the world helping customers to decide what digital camera they should buy. I regret to tell you that F717 from Sony is a failure model. Good camera if it is still working. If you want more details, please send me a e-mail ( f717failure@hotmail.com ) that I will send you a complete report (the same that I have sent to SONY USA, BRAZIL, JAPAN and CARL ZEISS - GERMANY. We can make the difference (all together). Maybe Sony will show us (customers) more respect in future. Regards and good luck.

I bought my DSA-F717 5 years ago I had it fix by sony 2years ago and it back to square one, with no recourse but to buy a new camera the Pentex and Nikon are both very good options the VR is in the Lens of the Nikon whic means any problems buy a lens the Pentex Has it in the body but the nice thing is you can get old lens to fit it from a hock shop because of the body VR and that it will except screw on and twist on lens. My Sony has been a night mare I am sick now (46 yrs. old)and have lost all kinds of memories for my child and future grandchildren to remember me by, they don't understand their product or the service people exspect to get from it. I paid $1600.00 Canadian, this is not a cheap pocket camera or is it?

Hi there, I too is a victim of Sony's I dont care attitude... I have this Cybershot DSC-T3 which is obviously one of the defective models. After having it for about 3 years, i have this problem of black screen with colored streak showing when you take pictures. It was working fine two weeks ago. The camera was purchased in Germany and was a present to my son from his dad. They will not fix it for free here in the US because they said it wasn't on the recall list - but everywhere I look on the internet , it said it was one of the defective ones. I didnt even bother to argue as i guess the price of the same model nowadays are probably lower than what they want to charge me for it - $180 something dollars... I can buy a brand new one for that price ... Now my question is, what camera brand should I get since we need a new one... my son is only 12 and isn't exactly into taking his own pictures ... but the camera means a lot to him since it was a present from his dad. I was thinking of sending it to the Philippines to have it fixed, it will not cost me $180 for sure... just to get the camera working again , for sentimental reasons. Eileen

I turned my DSCF717 on about 6 week ago to take pictures of my kids and up poped a redish blur and black background, I guess I'm in the same boat as everybody else. Maybe we should all get together and put all our cameras in 18 wheeler and send them back to Sony and tell them where to put them! I was going to give this camers to my daughter so she could take great pictures of my grandson and up grade to Sonys new SLR, but I guess not now.My wife and I have two of Sonys top of the line Video camers and I really like them , but I don't think I can every go back and buy another sony product. If you here that Sony may recall this product please e-mail me and let us know. Thank you for all your iformation it really help to understand that it costly mistake on us consumers. Greg Reilly

Same has happened here. 2years and the ccd has gone. After years of brand loayalty to Sony, I will not be purchasing another sony camera and will think twice before purchasing any other Sony products. Considering how common place ccd technology is these days and how cheap it's becoming to manufacture on mass, I agree it's absurd that they insist on charging so much for repairs or replacement. The again, you get what you pay for, cheap crap.
