JVC av 36890

JVC av36890 "Focus"

I have a JVC av36890 repaired by a local tv repairman last week (power issue). The last thing he did when he was all done was something where he adjusted the "focus", which was in the back of the tv. While he was doing it I was watching and the picture got crisper and duller for lack of better terms. Well, everything seems almost too sharp or too focused now.(I cant really describe it any better) I can unscrew all the screws and take off the back panel, I saw him do that, it doesn't look like rocket science. I just want to know where this "focus knob" is he adjusted so I can adjust it back to where it was (im not sure why he touched it, that had nothing to do with original problem). Can Someone tell me where it is once I open up the back of the tv ? It looked like he was reaching more upwards towards the back of the tube. Thank-you very much.

Well, I took off the back of tv, found the focus knob, and sure enough, that was the problem and fixed it. Thank-you very much. It was right where you said it was and looked exactly the way you described it. It was easy to fogure out which knob of the two because it was the less dusty one of course. Thank-you again for your help. Made a big difference.

I am so very greatful for your help. The way you have explained it will give me the confidence to at least look in there if the repairman does not help me out. If I can find it and adjust it based on your description I would be very happy. If for some reason I cannot locate it or it is different looking once I get back there, I could always close it back up and describe what I am seeing on here. If there is a way to post a sketch or find one online that you could link to, I always could use it. A sketch or diagram would make me even more confident in my novice electronic abilities. Thank-you so very much.

Although they can very slightly, they are always usually horizontally positioned and appear similar to looking at the top end of a fine writer felt tip pen, but a little thinner, and if you look carefully you will see a small recessed slot on the end to enable it to be be turned. Many sets have two adjusters one above the other, but if you shine a torch directly onto them you will see "focus" embossed on the background plastic next to the one you want, the other might say "screen" don't touch that one. Everything mentioned is the view seen directly when the back of the cabinet is removed, as adjustments are normally always done from that position and not anywhere over the chassis. A pointer of to where to look is to just follow the red EHT lead from the tube downwards, don't touch anywhere near it though! as its the rear part just about parallel with the back of the chassis that you want. I will have a check and see if I can get a sketch, although the site doesnt allow attachments to be added.

Thank-you very much for replying. I think I am going to try to get the repairman back out to fix it before I would try anything. It sounds like if you don't know what you're doing you could easily get zapped and I am a total novice with electronics. If he doesn't come out or gives me a hard time, does this focus that I am adjusting with a flathead screwdriver look like an actual knob or just a screw ? Is it easy to find/easily reconizable ? Thank-you again.

Cant say for 100% certain on that model but in general terms the focus control is usually situated on the side of the EHT transformer that faces out towards the back of the set and is located near the bottom of it, and "NOT" anywhere near the top where the red 25KV lead to the tube comes out of. (DANGER!!) If you see the adjuster (usually recessed slightly) use a super insulated flat screwdriver to very slowly turn it either way until you get the desired result.
