02-078 error code points to a problem with the takeup reel motor in the deck. In this case, the error means that the motor is drawing too much current. This could be caused by a defective motor, a bad tape, a problem in the motor control circuitry, etc. Difficult to troubleshoot without opening the deck and examinig the mechanism.
