thanks for your advice, I know another tape has been used but the same problem occured. It says it's in safe mode? is this to protect the camera? thanks

Yes! as when the take up spindle doesnt turn properly the tape would keep doubling up inside the mechanism, this is why the safeguard mode cuts out the drive motor and warns you of a problem.
If the blowing air into the mechanism advice doesnt help then its a case dismantling job for further investigation.
