With Firewire you shouldn't really need any dedicated software apart from normal video capture features as found in most commercially available types. It should be said that the PC itself can cause problems dependant on the type of Firewire board fitted and also whatever operating system your PC is running on. Also note that DV cable should be connected first to the PC, then the camcorder.
