Sounds suspiciously like the dreaded "lens cap" image sensor failure, as the D73 is on a list of models that have the potential to develop that fault, however advice sent via DIRECT e-mail. PS:- "Previously" (but not recently) recorded material should though still play back perfectly OK, that applies to both vision and audio.
