I have the same problem. The only thing is is that the lens will not go back into the camra. It's like it just died.

  I have had this with LS743, took both covers off to try and blow clean and did not work. Out of frustation as I have already purchased a new camera I tapped the lens on my mouse mat quite firmly whilst the covers were off and the damn thing now works, ironic after replacing it. I believe the retracting lens gets stuck with small debris and dust.
