WOW! It has been an issue for JVC Cameras for years! I just sent mine off to repair. I will see if I can report an update as JVC progress through this customer service issue : "The message "Lens Cap" appears when the camera is turned on, there is no image to see and it will not record, but the playback facility of old tapes still works fine."
