Re[3]: no power on SONY SLV-E700

James Posted Feb 08, 2008, in response to:Rory

Your machine sounds like mine - a SLVE700UX. I have just suffered this common problem - power off, and will not start up again when plugged in. I am guessing that you have either fixed the problem, or binned the machine. Hopefully my reply will help some other poor soul though. Yes, the capacitors that need replacing are sealed in the metal box in this machine. You need to de-solder it from the board, and its electrical connections too - I thought this would be difficult, but it wasn't too tricky. Having done that you can open it up and replace the 4 capacitors quite easily (available from Maplin). The PCB on mine was in quite a bad state, after one of the capacitors had leaked, but the replacement seems to have done the trick. My only word of caution is to be careful: on my machine there are two transformers on the mains end of the PSU board, after which mains is rectified, giving 300V DC on the board. I also replaced the large 68uF capacitor on that part of the board while I had it apart - probably sensible. I could only find a similar replacement for this one at RS. Good luck!
