If when this happens you immediately switch across to some other mode and the sound returns, then it could point to the CD/DVD laser being faulty and dropping out after the time factor you mention. However if this doesnt happen and the audio is still off, then it could be a fault with the output amplifier packing in when stressed whilst playing DVD / Cd's, as they can make peak demands on the amplifier of a nature that doesnt occur when on other non digital modes.
