I did do the tech adjust method. I was able to adjust the convergence, but there is still some fairly severe distortion of the red convergence in the upper right corner (most severe example) and other areas of the TV (much less severe.) I had my uncle, who's an electrical engineer who started out as a tv repairman, look at it. We went through all the convergence menus (customer and tech) and he manually adjusted the red gun. At the end he switched the feeds on the red and green circuits. The Green then exhibited the same distortion the red had shown. I just want to justify the purchase and be fairly positive that I will be fixing the problem before I lay out the money.
