I have a problem with video camera in safe guard mode. I put a tape in and it eats the tape.

I have tried to reset by taking out the battery, but this did not help. I don't have the manuel and not sure how to get it outof safe mode. I don't know why it would be eating tapes. Can you help? Thank you
