Lots of thanks - this is NOT a wind-up. I was on honeymoon with my new wife in Paris when her sony cybershot started giving this error. The lens wouldn't retract and the camera wouldn't focus. Using the reset button, replacing the batteries, etc. wouldn't work either. Reluctantly we concluded this had to be a hardware problem. So we googled E:61:00 and this was the first thread to come up. We thought it had to be a joke, but we were facing buying a new camera the next day so we had nothing to lose. IT WORKS!!! Just gently drop the camera a few centimetres onto a soft surface and it will jog the component into place.
