JVC AV-32980 power issues

Per-Ola Posted Feb 26, 2007, in response to:Stacy Sample

Our JVC AV-32980 (32" CRT TV) was working fine one evening. Next morning I was to turn it on, nothing. Stone dead. About to haul it out of the house to a TV repair shop, but decided to look on-line first. 2nd hit in google (after one ad for a manual) was pointing to this forum and directly to a common problem with capacitor C926. Took the TV apart, a little while to locate C926 but once done, I sort of could trace a "clean" area under/around the capacitor (rest of mainboard was covered in dust). Soldered it out and it was pretty clear that this little capacitor had had a small amout of electrolyte leaking out of it. Did pass by RadioShack today and picked up a new 1000uF 35V capacitor (article number 272-1032). Price $1.73 including WA tax. Back home, solder new capacitor into place and try power the TV up. Starts-up, just like before. Wow, $1.73! Put the back cover on again, lift the TV onto its stand and connect all the cables. EVERYTHING works as before EXCEPT that the TV no longer reacts to the signals from the remote control. Tried with both the JVC remote and a few generic ones. TV works, but does not pick up commands from remote. Front panel buttons all works. Anyone has any idea what could be wrong? Just go back in and "wiggle" a few connections, or does anyone know what module that is the "remote commander"? Apart from that, many thanks to several posters in this forum. Without you, I'd never been able to find the C926 problem!

I would also like to say thanks to those who notified this forum of the capacitor issue on this model. Mine went dead last night, found the tip here this morning and did the same thing. Went to radio shack for the cap and replaced it. Works fine. Thanks again!

Well, turns out TV is working fien with remote as well. Just sort of happend to touch a button on a different JVC remote control one night (remote for A/V receiver). TV turned off and on again. No other controls for a TV on that remote. It was not until the following day that I realized that the TV actually was working (must have been tired). Tried with its normal remote, and all good again. TV's just like before. Hence, no idea what created this problem, if there ever was a "real" problem, and no actions were taken to fix it. I was dragging my feet to have to open up the TV again and at least "wiggle" some connections. But, thanks to this forum, I managed to get directed to the "C926" problem and fix that one. It solved the "non-starting" TV and all is good in the family again. Thanks for the psotings, and the e-mails I've gotten with suggestion on where to look.

What you mention would suggest a much simpler fault than possibly thought, as the section you refer to is not connected to the area that you made the repair in. I would have a look at the IR control pick up sensor to make sure that you haven't either bent it out of position, unwittingly disconnected it or alternatively accidentally blocked its view when you re-assembled the chassis.
