I am not sure if I called them or not back when I bought this pre-amp in late 2005. I decided not to worry about the silly volume knob. I should probably use that money to purchase the replacement laser block for my similar vintage X303ES CD-player. I love the early Sony ES gear...top notch. Best, Tim
