The safeguard indication is only really a warning that the control circuitry has shut down the mechanism as its detected a problem somewhere, and of course that can mean anywhere! The great problem is that if no error code indication is also shown other than that seen then its nearly impossible to guess where the problem is, although in many JVC camcorders it originates in the tape drive mechanism.
