How do you know that the heads need to be replaced. How was the picture like?

There is a slight green horizontal rainbow on the picture. Maybe the heads need just cleaning. It is only seen when the picture is dark. There is no problem when the tape is played on the older CCD-VX1/VX3 camcorder.
