The 'lens cap' problem was the photo-sensitive chip inside. JVC repairer in Sydney fixed for free, no arguments, under a kind of specially 'extended warranty'. I had my reciept and warranty papers. Another gent, who it seems bought his 'from a friend' and had no reciepts etc, did not seem to fare so well.
One thing though: The repairer made a strong point of saying that the tape should be ejected and reloaded each time before turning on. Presumably to break the tape away from the capstan head which i'm guessing can stick to it, perhaps causing the motor to stall and burn out. Another common fault it seems?
While no one wants to have problems in the first place, JVC came good on the warranty repair.
