I have had a dead SONY SLV-E700 in the cupboard for a few years now. It suffered from the same start-up problems described in this thread.
I happened to see your reply about the faulty 1uF capacitors, complete with picture, and decided to have a go at reviving it.
Having stripped the video down I measured the values of the 2 capacitors. One was 0.4uF and the other was completely dead. Replacing them with new ones from Maplin has done the trick, and we are now a 2 video family once more.
