DSR-PDX10P Firewire Audio Capture In Mono

Jim Kearns Posted Feb 06, 2004

Only captures left audio track at 48 Khz 16 bit mode, if tape is recorded on PDX10P. 32 Khz 12 bit mode OK.

Hi, This camera has a problem that Sony are ignoring at the moment. When capturing via firewire to PC with 48 Khz 16 bit audio mode, only the left mono track is transfered. This only happens with tapes recorded on DSR-PDX10P. Video is fine. There is no problem if the audio is at 32 Khz 12 bit mode. A tape captured at 48 khz 16 bit which was recorded on a Sony DCR-TRV18E, captures fine if transfered from DSR-PDX10P to PC. So the problem is with the data which is being recorded onto tape by the PDX10P. To verify this, I tried capturing from DCR-TRV18E to PC using a tape recorded on DSR-PDX10P. Same problem - left mono audio only. (DCR-TRV18E has never had a problem with either mode) Now the crazy thing is: Stereo audio is indeed recorded to tape because the analogue out is in stereo. Here's some more crazy stuff: Transfering via firewire from DSR-PDX10P to DCR-TRV18E gives stereo out of TRV18E analogue out, when it's newly recorded tape is played back. This newly recorded tape from DCR-TRV18E also won't transfer via firewire in stereo to PC. This camera just doesn't like PCs. Ive tried VIA and TI chipset capture cards and Win XP and Win 98 SE. Beam me up Scotty ! Cheers Jim Kearns

Oddly enough I have experienced this problem with a DSR-200A camcorder as well... Very frustrating.

I´ve been in contact with Adobe and Sony discussing this problem. Adobe do admit that this is a problem with PDX10 and DSR200. Now even the latest version of Windows Movie Maker(!!) capture in stereo (48 khz). So the support person I was in contact with tought there will be a uppgrade... You out there! take contact with Adobe in this matter and put some pressure on them....

Just encountered problem after 3 day shoot in France using split track audio I need both tracks!! It seems that the PDX10P is sending one side of the stereo out as amono sub stereo track(2) and the other as a mono on the main stereo (1) track - used dv gate which can read either to check this. This is a pain to have to work around! Steve

Here is the solution I found (in another forum). I bought Scenalyzer for 39$ (http://www.scenalyzer.com/ - free trial available): a nice tool for capturing and scene detection, which is able to correctly capture the PDX10 stereo audio. Regards, Eckhard

Hi, I have the same problem with my PDX10P. I also tried DVIO (nice, simple freeware tool) for capturing: Same problem, just mono. Also, I tried to set the VCR-playback channel selection differently (Ch1,Ch2 -> Ch1 -> ch2), hoping that at least I could capture the channels separately, one after the other. But: When setting to Ch2 output, I hear it in the build-in speaker of the camcorder, but still get ch1 in the pc. Thanks for your tip to use Liquid Edition - I will check that. Regards, Eckhard

Thanks Jim, I thought I was going nuts. I also have this problem - mono capture from my PDX10P. I'll keep searching for solution and let you know what I find. Keep me posted if you find a solution please. Cheers, Michael King.
