Make sure the batterie are good.

I had the same problem. There are batteries that fit the disk as well as the main battery for the camera. makes sure the 2 round batteries in the disk work. If they are not working it will cause the camera to read out "need to format". So make sure the 2 round batteries in the (disk) are new. This could be the problem.
