Hitting the lens with the battery taken out and retrying this seems to have worked. Clear picture and zoom working again.

thanks to all earlier suggestions to knock some sense into these delicate items of electronic equipment. I dont know how long it will last for but it has saved me pushing Tescos further on the European law front to get this repaired. The camcorder is only 18 months old and i definitiely wasnt paying the £175 Sony Service Centre wanted.
