Sony Camcorder error message C31:22

I've fiddled about with this for ages, tape in, tape out, to no avail, and was just deciding whether or not to have it serviced or buy new when lo and behold I came across your wonderful site and problem disappeared as quick as you could say camcorder! Smacking certainly did the trick, many,many thanks from a now NOT frustrated Granny
