I have an Emerson EWV603 that shows an "R" after the EJECT label on the screen. When I try to play a tape the machine powers down. I can watch TV channels thru the VCR, I just can't Record or play tapes that work in a duplicate machine in the bedroom ( which does NOT have an "R" after the EJECT label on the screen.
