This is most likely because you have joined the "memory" power input wire to the switched ignition output rather than where it should be, that is on the permanently live "input" to the switch. All car devices have two power input leads, one as above and the other which "does" go to the switched power so that the radio / CD unit illumination goes out when the ignition is switched off.
