No power when switched to camera mode,cassette door wont open on any setting.

I have a Sony camcorder as mentioned above.The cassette door will not open,there is no cassette in the camera.When on battery power,and the mode switch is set to 'player' the status indication appears in the side window of the camera,and also in the viewfinder.The menu settings also show in the viewfinder,but are very jittery when altering them via the thumbwheel control.The battery charges OK when the camera is set to 'off/charge'with the status showing correctly.But when I change to 'camera'the machine goes dead,with nothing showing anywhere. Any ideas? Jerry
