If it can only focus when the zoom is at full max then its a case of trying a test when it isn't! that being to hold something close to the lens whilst looking at the viewfinder and observe if can focus on a close up object, if it does then it suggests that you have accidentally dislodged a ribbon connector associated with the focusing motors control circuit, this likely happening whilst you were taking the side off the camcorder to disconnect the back up battery link from the rear case for memory resetting purposes, unless of course you managed just to take the rear case off. It should be said that if of course you couldn't get it to focus at all at any time then that could indicate a faulty CCD image sensor as your model can suffer from this, however as it does with the full zoom on then the CCD must be OK. Another possible reason could be that the auto focus isn't working even although its set for "on", once again a ribbon cable can be responsible for this.
