Error message: In safeguard mode. Remove battery

My video camera shows "E01 Unit in safeguard mode remove and reattach battery. Also the tape compartment will not close, with or without tape. All has been working fine until today. I have tried leaving battery off a little while and reattaching and still the same problem. Put on a new battery. No fix. Tried different tapes. Still, no fix. Please help. Thank you, Debbie
