Unit is in Safeguard mode - 06 Remove & Reattach Battery

Why does this keep coming up even if I have the unit plugged in and do as it says? Is there a way I can bypass the safeguard mode? I received this as a gift years ago and it hasn't been used in years (because of that reason) I went out & bought a Nikon digital, but still have some Mini DV's that I want to transfer over to DVD.
