Can I fix or replace the XLR adaptor?

I get a pretty good hiss on my audio when I shoot with my Sony HVR-A1U and I think it's coming from the XLR adapter. Is it possible to test the adapter or replace it? Is it expensive to test or is it just easier and cheaper to buy a new one? Does this particular adapter model have a history of problems?
