Unfortunately this is the classic symptom of the notorious lens cap problem, that being previously recorded tapes (not newly) can play back OK plus any tapes from another Mini DV camcorder, but when the camcorder is set to record the screen is blank. There was a qualified free repair on this running for the past three years, however it expired at the end of June this year, but if you feel inclined you could contact JVC customer services of wherever you are located as they may offer a goodwill repair provided you are the original purchaser of the device, AND have proof of this.
