Sounds as if it's a common problem with these TVs. Sorry to hear that there's probably no solution, but please add me to the list.

Purchased Sony flat screen in 2002. Had a good quality picture consistently. Several weeks ago it wouldn't turn on. I kept pushing the on button, and it would eventually go on. Replaced remote batteries. Thought I might have accidentally programmed the timer, checked that out. Standby light flashed continuously. Last evening the picture failed entirely, first by going to Jerry Garcia colors, then a partial screen, then a sliver. From what I've learned on this blog, (thank you all for posting) I won't purchase Sony again.
