Its far more likely to be a laptop problem rather than anything concerning the camcorder, as software is not necessary using DVi (firewire) links. Of course you will require some form of "video capture" software installed in your laptop, although this can be any type so long as it has video capture, EG: as in the standard installed Windows Movie maker, or bought types like Nero or similar.
