JVC has had a special free repair offer on this manufacturing fault running for about the last 36 months or so but unfortunately this expired at the end of June 2009, so all you can really do now is pay out the exorbitant charge (approx over half the original cost price) to have it repaired or contact JVC and "plead your case", which may work as its still the same manufacturing defect that caused the problem in the first place, and caused by faulty CCD modules (supplied by Sony) being fitted into a multitude of JVC models.
As you appear to be in New Zealand you could maybe phone the number below and see what they say, as its not unknown for JVC to offer a "goodwill" repair, if its a no-go then the device could be repaired very much cheaper by a suitably experienced person purchasing the CCD module and fitting it for you, the module in the UK being under £20.00GBP.
JVC service New Zealand (Wellington) contact number is: 0800 - 100 - 025.
