Nutone Model 3103 hum question

I have hum on my Nutone model 3103 when I switch it to TAPE model.I have hooked a RCA cable from the TAPE INPUT on the Nutone to my stereo output. It works great. What is unusual is that I get a hum when I hooked up the RCA wire EVEN BEFORE I hooked it in the stereo. So it is not the stereo, its is the wire. Is there a filter to block the hum?
