Repair Help

I have a Sony 52" Rear Projection tv. I purchased it in 2002, now the color is fading. Also, it turns itself off periodically. It just cuts off. My husband wants to throw away. I hate to lose it. Are there any suggestions. Repair tech stated $1200.00 to repair. What do you think?
