Difference between these items

What is the difference between the cd-r, dvd-r, dvd+r? I also need to know can you save Data, photos and music to all three? Does the dvd work in the computer after you burn on it?(if you put photos on?) Do different computers like dell, hp, etc take different ones? Why do some work for some computers and not work for others? People ask me all the time what they should buy and I don't know the difference between the 3. Please tell me all you can about them. I greatly appreciate it.
