JVC camcorder GR-D70E does not power up - need dismantling

Remi Posted May 08, 2009

Is there an easier trick to coerce a GR-D70 back to life than major surgery?

Hi, My GR-D70E does not power up. Fresh battery inserted, nothing happens when moving the main switch to play/A/M. Nothing happens when opening the tape compartment. The camera was working fine up to then. No condensation error, no battery safe mode. CCd was replaced a while ago. Note: i cannot check the power supply connection as my original charger got lost. I only operate with 2 batteries and a third party charger. I did check the batteries for charge, and also measured 9V across the power supply connector with a battery inserted. Any suggestions? I think i need to dismantle the camcorder, if anything to retrieve the tape but mostly because this doesn't sound like a major CCD problem. Thanks for looking, Remi

Check your e-mails, as info showing the fuse positions etc has been sent via DIRECT e-mail, as this should assist somewhat in making the task a bit easier.

Thank you for your reply. main charger got lost in the post after i forgot it at my mum's... bought an aftermarket charger from maplin as an emergency before my last trip with the camcorder. It did recharge the original battery, i was then able to tape 30 min of mountaineering over a 9 days period in Switzerland last month. got home, set to recharge the battery to download the tape onto my computer. charger did not recharge the battery and charger indicator didn't register battery. After the charge, the camcorder refused to power up. Note: it did power up at home before the charge. ordered a different charger with a spare battery from amazon. New charger recharged both old and new battery but still no life from the camcorder, on either battery. i did check the batteries with a voltmeter, both appear fully charged. So it looks like a small dismantle at the moment. Will try this weekend. Thanks again for your reply, remi

As you do not have the original charger / power supply then I am afraid dismantling is the only answer, as everything mentioned suggests that one of the eight internal "soldered in" fuses has blown, this not exactly an unknown thing to happen under the "just one of those things" banner, however the fact that you are using a third party charger would be a highly suspect possible reason for the problem. Unless you are acquaint at working on small pieces of precision equipment I would not advise attempting to access these fuses, however if you are then they are located on the main PC board just above the very right hand side vertical power socket, this having the power cables from the rear casing going into it. The main fuse and most likely one to have blown, being a "special" miniature 2amp 32 volt type.
