Solution to the problem for me was to remove power from unit (don't know that it matters), and when I plugged it back in, still got the "PROTECT" and shutdown. I tried turning it back on and held the power button in the "ON" position for about 10 seconds. Apparently that resets unit. I'm listening to it as I type this. I guess that JVC doesn't know this, although they did get back to me promptly. Good luck, I hope this works for y'all. AJ
