Circuit City salesman told me TV companies had trouble w/built in DVD players so better to buy separately, true?

I am shopping for a 26" HDTV. I already have a VHS for recording TV programming but want a DVD player. PC Richards has a Sharp w/built in DVD but then in Circuit City I am told there were problems w/those so better to buy separately. Anyone have an opinion?
