volume problem

I recently acquired a sony ps lx2 turntable. I have no problems playing records, but it seems that every set of speakers I've plugged the player into, the volume is extremely low (almost inaudible) so you have to have your ear right up next to the speaker in order to hear any music, even with the volume on the speaker is turned all the way up. How can I remedy this problem?
